Installing A Spike Sprinkler
Most people who hassle with garden hoses think that creating a sprinkler system is too much effort. I think those people are mistaken. By using spike sprinklers and a little bit of useful information, you can install your own sprinkler system.
The main things you need to make a spike sprinkler system work are the right water flow and pressure, a timer to switch the sprinklers on and off and also how the climate and soil will affect your landscaping.
What you need to do is first determine what your coverage area is, and how many sprinkler heads you will need to reach that coverage area. First, sketch out your yard on graph paper, and then start plotting out where you will place the different sprinkler heads to make sure you are getting the best coverage.
Ideally, you want to lay out your sprinkler heads in such a way that they all slightly overlap. Too much overlapping and you will be wasting water and over-watering parts of your yard.
Before digging any trenches it's important to call your local utility provider first to determine where the underground utilities are positioned at. They will come to your home and make a mark of all the utilities and their underground location for you. This won't cost you anything, as its pat of their job.
Now you will have to go about deciding how to dig your trenches. You can do it by hand with a shovel. I wouldn't recommend you go this route. A much better use of your time is renting a trencher to dig the trench. Additionally, you should consider getting a trencher that will also install piping as it digs the trenches.
Using a shovel is not only slower, but it is likely to cause much more of a mess.
Finally, test your system out to make sure everything is working properly. Run the water and see how the sprinklers respond. If the coverage isn't exactly how you figured it to be then make some adjustments to the sprinkler heads.
If this sounds like too much work for you or you are still turned off by installing your own sprinkler system, then consider hiring a professional. While you might have to pay more if you go this route, at least you will save a bundle of time and are more likely to get everything working right.
In conclusion, I have shared with you some information on how to build spike sprinkler systems.
